Title

kaila - "Finnish origami" on the water's surface - Photography by Pekka Hassinen

Description

'Finnish origami' on the water's surface. The photographs show a previously unknown phenomenon, called 'kaila', a series of artefacts made by the artist himself. These wisps of things made of bulrush leaves float on the water's surface, surrounded by lakeland scenery. Shooting the kailas is a bit like fly fishing, as the artist wades in the shallows with the camera in his hand, trying to capture the kailas on film before they are carried out of reach by the slightest breath of air. The kaila belongs to a world only inhabited by Water Boatmen and Pond Skaters, where the most fundamental principle of reality is the surface tension of water. In essence, the kaila is situated somewhere between organic material and the inanimate world, and it could be called a 'livject', only a few of which are known to our culture: a bridal bouquet, a birch whisk, a laurel crown. The kaila is also of the world of the mind, for it is an aesthetic object and a means of meditation. These web pages contain the philosophy of kaila as an object of thought, therapy and contemplation.
