Description
To understand the history, the culture, and the purpose of KaBOOM!, we begin with the story of our CEO and Co-Founder Darell Hammond. When Darell was just four years old, he and his 8 brothers and sisters were sent to Mooseheart Child City and School, an orphanage outside of Chicago. Despite what many people might think about growing up in an orphanage, Darell actually has fond memories skipping rocks and climbing on the Mooseheart playground.
The Mooseheart community instilled in Darell the power of volunteerism. He was a Boy Scout as a child and went on to become an Eagle Scout in high school. Knowing he could never repay the kind men and women of the Moose financially for all they gave him, Darell decided to dedicate his life to serving others as so many had served him.
After graduating high school, Darell attended Ripon College in Wisconsin. It was during his junior year there that he built his first playground –pitching in to help a friend’s mother who was also an active community volunteer.
