JPMorgan Chase Open

Description

In the 37-year history of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, the JPMorgan Chase Open presented by Herbalife has hosted some of the most memorable and historic moments in women’s tennis. Since 2004, the annual WTA Tier II event has made a stop at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California on the campus of California State University, Dominguez Hills. Prior to 2004, the event called the Manhattan Beach Country Club in Manhattan Beach, California home for 21 years.

As part of the USTA’s U.S. Open Series, providing a U.S. Open bonus pool prize of money for top performers in selected tournaments, the JPMorgan Chase Open hosts 64 of the world’s best female tennis players (and 16 doubles teams). In the last two decades alone, eight players who have held the WTA’s No. 1 ranking have been JPMorgan Chase Open tournament champions, including defending champion Kim Clijsters (2005, 2003), Southern California native Lindsay Davenport (2004, 2001, 1998, 1996), Serena Williams (2000, 1999) and five-time champion (a tournament record) Martina Navratilova.

The 8,000-seat state-of-the-art tennis stadium at The Home Depot Center serves as the backdrop to west coast tennis. Home to the USTA’s High Performance Training Center and more than 30 courts (hard and clay), the official U.S. Olympic Training site regularly hosts top-ranked players in competition and training. In 2005, Andre Agassi, in conjunction with AEG and the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (LAJCC), named the facility home to “Agassi’s Safe Passage All-Stars,” an after-school tennis and scholastic program for at-risk youth in Southern California.
