Description
I am a professional drummer, working out of the San Francisco Bay Area. I play quite a lot of jazz out of a long love for the art form. I still remember my first jazz drum lesson where my mentor couldn't believe that I didn't listen to jazz and still I thought that I could become a jazz drummer. I've never forgotten that moment when I decided that I'd better start listening... I have cycled through quite a few major influences over the years including Max, Rollins, Miles, Tony, Ron, Herbie, Coltrane, Elvin, Blakey, Philly Joe, howcome you can tell who they all are from just one name? Lately I've been listening to a lot of Medeski Martin and Wood, Galactic, John Scofield, Metheny, Joshua Redman, Wynton Marsalis, and especially Brad Meldau.
I also find myself spending quite some time with percussion and real-time electronic processing. I value improvisation as a center to my musical focus. Everything I do has an element of improvisation in it, and in most cases interaction with group improvisation. I have been interested in the concept of live looping for several years now. In the last two years, I have been able to afford to aquire and develop the tools to perform live looping. I'm using an EDP digital delay and an Electrix Repeater to sample my playing live and recall those loops. This has been a very satisfying area of music for me which allows me to improvise solo or as part of a group within (and outside) many different genres.
