When you step into John Reilly's gallery, you come unprepared for the experience. Hanging everywhere are museum quality photographs. There are women in glamorous gowns, mothers and daughters, famous men in formal poses, animals and their owners, and much, much more. Bins stand in the corners with unframed shots that one can casually search through, and on a cocktail table are wedding albums filled with photos that look as if they are straight out of a fairy tale, with brides whose beauty would that rival any princess.
In the midst of his gallery, located at 358 W. Ontario in Chicago, is John Reilly. After residing on both east and west coasts, studying in Paris and living in European cities, Reilly finally settled for a life in the Mid West. In the 1970's he received a teaching position at the University of Illinois. As a professor of history, at the graduate level, John thrived in the academic environment. However, puttering around with a camera as a hobby, he soon realized that he was truly meant to be a photographer. Much like the statement made by the fictional National Geographic photographer, who recently gained fame in the Bridges of Madison County, it seemed as if all of Reilly's earlier experiences and vocations were simply leading him ultimately to this career. With a natural love of all living things, and a gentle and nurturing nature that makes everyone feel comfortable, John is able to harness the essence of his subjects and capture them on film. Relaxed and at ease in his environment, clad in gym shoes and casual clothes, Reilly will talk about his love for photography and how rewarding it is to make people happy by making them look their best.
