The Russian language is a common heritage to over 15,000 people of different nationalities and religious groups living in the Frankfurt area.
“ISTOK” (meaning ‘source’ - pronounced eastock) is primarily involved in three areas:
- Education - where our school plays the central role,
- Cultural dialogue - promoting the synergy of our German-Russian multicultural situation and
- Integration - helping immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Germany.
Since 2005 the ISTOK Russian school in Frankfurt has been running courses for Russian-speaking children. The classes are taught by Russian school teachers who now live locally. In addition to this we have many extra-mural activities e.g. chess, drama, dance, choir, art and even archaeology. We also offer Russian as a foreign language for non-native speakers.
We offer extra-mural activities for adults, youth and children, and organise and support German-Russian events, in an effort to support the individual throughout the integration process.
We actively seek and foster contacts with Russian and German academics, organising meetings, talks, seminars and the like, concentrating on those areas which promote German-Russian dialogue.
We believe the roots of social integration problems can be traced back the pre and primary school years, especially when the issue of cultural difference has not been tackled effectively.
