Guilty of Web-spamming and cloaking subscription-only content
The IEEE, despite being one of the largest and most respected professional societies, also suffers from profoundly bad judgment in regards to its marketing of subscription-only journals on the Internet. The issue is their black-hat practice of search engine spamming (a.k.a. Web spamming)-- presenting different content to search engine crawlers than to search engine users. IEEE allows the Googlebot to index its full-text journal articles, but when Google users try to "click through" the links to IEEE Xplore, they are served up a redirect to the subscription page. It's time for IEEE to understand that cloaking and black-hat SEO spamming of any flavor are disgusting and intolerable behaviors. I urge consumers to avoid subscribing to IEEE journals.
