This is referred to as the Red Book. It is highly respected and the oldest pricing guide in the industry. Similarly, he was one of the few experts asked by the "Coin Dealer Newsletter" to help them formulate their initial price quotations covering U.S. gold coins. This company regularly issues pricing guides that are essential for all dealers in the industry.
Dr. Appel's reputation in rare date gold coinage caused him to be approached by both the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC). Both grading services asked his help in their formulating accurate standards for the grading of these coins. In fact, at the request of PCGS, he assembled a group of coins to be used as their "standard set", against which all such coins were to be compared and graded.
