Description
Today's Icelandic sheep are direct descendants of the sheep that the Vikings brought to Iceland from Norway in 874-110 A.D. Isolated and protected from natural crossbreeding, the Icelandic sheep retain the qualities of those primitive sheep. They developed into a hardy breed due to the harsh climate of Iceland and the minimal management by herders. They were first brought into North America in 1985 by Stefania Sveinbjarnardottir-Dignum (native of Iceland), now living in Ontario, Canada.
Icelandic sheep are an intelligent breed and very individualistic and respond well to humans. Each sheep has its own personality. Some are very friendly, while others can be aloof and cautious. Rams, although they can be friendly, are to be respected due to their natural aggressiveness, especially during breeding season.
Breeding starts in late fall. The ewes gestation period is 142 days, five days shorter than other breeds. This results in smaller lambs and easier lambing ewes that rarely need assistance. Ewe lambs usually produce a single lamb or twin, but adult ewes often have twins or triplets and occasionally quads. Icelandic ewes are naturally good mothers and very protective of their lambs. Their lambs gain quickly on just milk and grass alone.
