Drums and percussion, joined IRIE TIME in 1998 and has helped bring the band to a new level of musical artistry. Having played drums since he was very young, Eric effortlessly executes complex rhythmic patterns almost as if the drums were an extension of his own body; and has, thus, become a "central attraction" at the group's live performances. Audiences seem mesmerized by his relaxed delivery of the solid beats he leads the band with.
Eric Porter's passion for drums and percussion started back as early as he can remember. He always had a musical ear thanks to his parents, who are also musicians. Being raised in a musical environment, he actually started playing when he was about five years old, and was playing professionally by the age of 15 at the local Baptist church. He maintains a style all his own, but his musical influences are many: Steve Gadd, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers, Tony Williams, Gerald Hayword, Dave Wekyl, Tony Royster Jr., Little John, Akira Jimbo, Chris Daddy Dave, David Girbaldi and Virgil Donatti. These varied influences contributed to his mastering numerous styles, such as straight-ahead swing, blues, R&B, funk, fusion, reggae, calypso, latin, salsa, bosa, etc. The two drum trapsets Eric now plays are the Tama Superstar and the Premier Cabria. The Zildjian cymbals he uses consist of crash A-custom 14" and A-custom 15", ride K-custom 22", custom KZ hi-hats 13", Wuhan China boy 14", Splash A-custom 8", 10" and 12", and an Omar Hakim signature snare. Keyboards and vocals, has worked with several prominent bands, with styles ranging from Jazz and Reggae, to House and Pop. He has toured Europe with a number of his projects, and has performed in opening acts for major recording artists including Deborah Harry, Information Society, La Tour, and The Wailers Band. Lars has also performed with international groups such as Inner Sense from England, Issou Group from Japan, and Carlos Benevent from Spain. He was drawn into Reggae as a result of his on-going esteem for Bob Marley and his music, and has performed at Bob Marley festivals throughout the U.S. with IRIE TIME. Lars' world class style of playing is a prominent part of the band's spirited, island sound.
