Description
It's been over 500 years since Hilton Head Island has been settled. Capt. William Hilton from Barbados explored the region in 1663. In his honor, the Island was named Hilton Head.
General Joseph Fraser and Fred C. Hack wanted to use Hilton Head Island as a tree farm in the 1950's. They collectively bought thousands of acres of wooded area. Years later Charles Fraser (Joseph Frasier's son) developed the first resort community on the southern tip of the island Sea Pines. The island then became a haven for resorts and golfing.
A lot of the businesses in and around Hilton Head cater to the tourism dollar. Timeshares, special package deals, and beachfront condos are prevalent throughout the island, creating a year-round tourist population.
