Title

Huddersfield Civic Society

Description

What are our aims?

The society is associated with the National Civic Trust movement and aims to encourage high standards of architecture and town planning. We wish to stimulate public interest and pride in caring for the town in the tasteful treatment of its existing buildings and in the improvements of its amenities. These conservation principles for earlier buildings are displayed by the Yorkshire Building Society Building in St George's Square, the Henry Street and Aspley warehouses conversions into flats and most recently, John William Court and the Highfield Annexe of the Technical College.

We are not a preservation body and spend as much time looking forward as looking back. We welcome new buildings of quality which are in sympathy with their surroundings even if this involves the demolition of existing buildings. Examples of good new buildings are the Galpharm Stadium, incinerator/recycling complex and the Springwood housing development.

There are Civic Societies active in various parts of Kirklees and Calderdale and our particular sphere of interest approximates to the old County Borough of Huddersfield.
