Cletus "Pete" Hicks, born in 1912, began in the sign business in 1936 at the age of 24 in which his first paid job was a wooden, hand painted "Restroom" sign. He painted this sign in the basement of his mother’s home in Coloma, Michigan. Surprisingly this sign has survived and now resides in the front office at the sign shop.
Shortly afterward, Pete formed a partnership with another man under the name of Twin City Sign Service. This partnership only lasted a few years until the partner wanted to move to another part of the country. The company was originally located in downtown St. Joseph, Michigan and was moved several times until it found a home in 1964 on Buss Street. It was operated under several names including Hicks Sign Service, Hicks Neon Signs, and Hicks and Sons Outdoor Advertising.
Pete’s sons, Ray and Don Hicks, operated the business under the name of Hicks Sign Company after Pete's death in 1961. They brought the business to it’s present location on Niles Road. The business was incorporated in 1987 and a year later Ray retired.
Don brought his son, Don Hicks, II, into the shop in 1980.
Today, Don no longer owns the company having sold the company to his son and daughter-in-law in 2004. He now splits his time between his home in Michigan and another home in Arizona. Don, II sees to the day-to-day sales, production, and operations of the company.
Don Hicks, II, and his wife Kim, currently own and operate the business. Don, II is the 3rd generation of sign professionals and is the current President in charge of operations. Kim is the Graphic Artist as well as handles most of the office paperwork.
Hicks Sign Company currently has five full time employees. They design, produce, and maintain all types and all sizes of signs including but not limited to electrical, neon, banners, magnetic signs, real estate and construction type signs, etc.
