Description
Many people who are diagnosed with genital herpes experience shock, shame and feelings of isolation; accentuated by the myths, ignorance and stigma which society, both lay and professional, perpetuates.
Overseas studies of population groups similar to New Zealand show one in seven people 1, or even more 2, have been exposed to, and infected, by the herpes simplex virus which causes genital herpes. Many of these people do not experience recognised symptoms but can transmit the virus from time to time.
The Auckland Herpes Support Group with the help of health professionals and Glaxo Wellcome New Zealand has established the Foundation in response to the need to provide support, understanding and education to people diagnosed with genital herpes.
