The cats and dogs, bunnies and birds, and other furry friends who share our homes and lives give us so much and ask so little in return. Yet, many companion animals have never known a warm place to lay their heads, a nutritious meal, or even a kind human touch. That’s why PETA is dedicated to making a difference for needy animals in our own community and around the world.

Rolling Up Our Sleeves to Help Needy Animals

Every day, PETA’s Community Animal Project (CAP) field workers hit the streets, delivering sturdy, hand-built doghouses filled with straw to dogs chained up outside, plucking terrified cats from high up in trees, whisking confused dogs from rush-hour traffic, and working with local law enforcement to ensure that companion animals are cared for properly and rescued from abusive situations. PETA’s mobile spay/neuter clinic, Spay and Neuter Immediately, Please (SNIP), travels to low-income neighborhoods and performs about 25 low- or no-cost sterilization surgeries a day, preventing thousands of unwanted animals from being born—only to suffer on the streets or be euthanized in shelters.

From the Courtroom to Ground Zero

PETA’s cruelty caseworkers work to bring justice to animals and prevent future cases of abuse by writing letters to prosecutors and judges, urging them to vigorously prosecute and issue strict sentences for alleged and convicted animal abusers, offering rewards for information in cruelty cases, and pushing for anti-chaining and mandatory spay/neuter legislation. PETA works to protect animals from natural disasters as well by monitoring weather reports and sending out alerts preparing people to keep their animal companions safe before hurricanes, fires, blizzards, and other disasters strike.
