- My name is Helen Hong and I'm a comedian living in New York City. I got the name Helen because my first-grade teacher couldn't pronounce my Korean name (Hae-Seung... don't try it, you'll hurt yourself) and after repeated mangled attempts, my mother went "That's okay, just call her Helen." That's better than what happened to my sister, who was named Julie, but spelled July. My parents couldn't figure out why everybody kept calling her July like the month, and after a few months of that they went "That's okay, just call her Amy." (huh?) My parents gave themselves American names too. My dad is Ray (pronounced "Lay") and my mom is Lisa (pronounced "Risa").
