Description
Our farm is about an hour west of San Antonio, Texas, near Yancey. We produce fallow deer for venison, breeding stock and for antler development. We have about 1000 fallow deer on about 400 acres of irrigated, improved pastures. We feed wheat and oats in the winter and a sudan-sorghum hybrid, called Haygrazer, in the summer. Heart-Bar Deer Farms, Ltd., is owned by the Scott Petty family.
Our roots go back to cattle production in Texas and we enjoy and appreciate the agricultural lifestyle. On a family trip to New Zealand, we saw how fallow deer and red deer were being farmed. We learned most of the venison consumed in the United States is imported from New Zealand. We decided to try deer farming to produce high-quality venison for the domestic market. That was in 1988.
All the deer species available to farm in North America have positive attributes. We decided on fallow deer for several reasons:
