Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika

Description

Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust is one of a number of Maori health provider organisations set up throughout New Zealand in the 1990s, run by Maori for Maori. The purpose of these organisations is to try and “narrow the gaps” in health statistics that exist here between people of Maori and European ancestry. This region, Te hiku o te ika, the tail of the fish, is made up of 5 predominant iwi (tribes), namely Ngati Kuri, Te Aupouri, Ngaitakoto, Te Rarawa, Ngati Kahu.

With the health reforms of 2003 – 2004 and the setting up of PHOs (Primary Healthcare Organisations) throughout New Zealand, Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust combined with Whakawhiti Ora Pai, the Far North peninsula Maori health trust to take over the primary health capitation for approx 4500 patients. This has changed the nature of the Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust and Whakawhiti Ora Pai organisations, bringing in the responsibilities of full time primary health care, and general family practice services with after-hours emergency roster, etc, in addition to the original mobile nursing, and disease state management contracts etc.

Te Hauora O Te Hiku O Te Ika Trust and Whakawhiti Ora Pai services combined have since 1995 developed from holding several small contracts, into a large Primary Health Care Team, with approaching 40 full time workers, including 18 registered nurses, 3 fulltime doctors, as well as numerous kaimahi/community workers and enrolled nurses. The last year and a half has seen the development of a fulltime GP clinic in the town of Kaitaia, a full time GP clinic in Doubtless Bay, weekly GP clinics in Te Kao and fortnightly GP clinics in Te Hapua.
