Title

Haley House

Description

Haley House has a rich history serving those who have experienced the effects of inequality and those surviving on the fringe of society. It was started in a basement apartment almost forty years ago by a few people desiring to live and share resources with poor people, mostly men suffering from alcoholism. All programs reflect our commitment to the principle that everyone has a right to be treated with dignity, offered real challenges, and afforded the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

Haley House built its programs organically, responding to different needs with different strategies. In 1966 we established a Soup Kitchen for homeless men at 23 Dartmouth Street in Boston’s South End. The Soup Kitchen was staffed then, as it is now, by live-in volunteers who choose to live simply in community receiving room and board for their services. As we learned that many of our elderly neighbors were isolated and living in poverty, we began hosting evening dinners for both their nutritional and social benefit. Displacement and homelessness increased in the 80’s, and so we focused on meeting the increased need for permanent housing. Since 1979 we have developed 102 units of affordable, predominantly low-income, housing in the South End.

In the last seven years, we have focused on job creation and job training in order to support people in their move toward self-sufficiency. We have established two non-profit enterprises: Whats Up, a magazine sold by homeless and low-income vendors with a focus on social justice issues and alternative arts and media; and The Bakery at Haley House, a job training program for underemployed individuals that operates within a small business.
