Habitat for Humanity Prince George Society
Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing worldwide and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. It involves needy and affluent people working together in equal partnerships, refinishing or building homes, relationships and a sense of community.
Through volunteer labour, efficient management, and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates homes with the help of homeowners. Houses are sold at no profit to partner families and no interest mortgages are issued. Small monthly mortgage payments, including taxes and insurance are repaid over an average of 20 years and deposited into a revolving "fund for humanity" which supports the construction of more houses.
Partner families enter a joint venture in which those benefiting from it participate directly in the work. Each homeowner must invest 500 hours of unpaid labour or "sweat equity" in the construction of their or others' homes. This reduces cost, increases pride of ownership and fosters positive relationships.
