Free eBooks - Project Gutenberg

Logo-gutenberg-org.jpg
With over 19,000 free books and other materials in electronic formats, Project Gutenberg is the world's largest single collection of free electronic books, or eBooks.

The books and materials from Project Gutenberg are distributed free of charge, and most (but not all) materials are available for the downloader to do anything they wish with the material. Beyond reading the books, this means they can edit, redistribute, adapt the book for the stage, or take sections of the texts for art projects without legal ramifications due to copyright infringement.

Copyrights and Other Licenses

Public Domain Books

Generally books where the US copyright has expired (although maybe not in other countries), these books are part of the public domain meaning anyone in the US can read and distribute them. If you don't live in the United States you'll have to check the laws of the country you live in before downloading and distributing our ebooks.

Copyrighted Books

There are some books on Project Gutenberg that are still copyrighted. These are books where the authors have given Project Gutenberg permission to distribute their book(s). This permission does not automatically expand to include the readers/downloaders. People wanting to distribute or modify copyrighted books found on Project Gutenberg will have to contact the author and stipulate an agreement.

For more information about what freedoms you have to utilize the eBooks found on Project Gutenberg, read here: No Cost or Freedom?

Information on the Licensing and Trademarks can be found here: The Project Gutenberg License
