- If you have been keeping up with the Genesis Health Club tax incentive issue you probably are as mad as I am. I couldn't believe the paper on Wednesday morning when it said Genesis would receive the bonds and tax abatements even though just a couple of weeks earlier every member of the City Council had vowed to rescind them because Genesis really did not fit the criteria for economic incentives. Additionally, these incentives would give Genesis an unfair advantage over local competitors which was expressly prohibited by the policy at the time. In fact it is still prohibited by the new policy. Our city leaders said that they were concerned about the integrity of the council if they went back on their initial approval. Correct me if I'm wrong but I now question the integrity of every one of the members that cowed down to the Mayor and Genesis and whomever else was putting pressure on them to go ahead and give this handout.What kind of position has the council now put themselves in by denying the same incentives to Fitness 2000? On top of that, for the council to then say that they have consulted with the city attorney and are not worried about a law suit is just incredible. They deserve to be sued. I can't believe we have elected so many incompetent leaders. Some have admitted to making decisions before fully understanding the ramifications of those decisions. Shame on them. Shame on us for not holding them accountable. These citizens are put in their respective positions to represent the people that live in their districts. Every person living in those districts should be breakind down their doors to let them know how disappointed we are and that if they don't fix it they will be looking for a job.
