Founder Paul W. Abernathy a LMG for over 17 years and general manager of some of the largest grooming and boarding kennels in Central Virginia decided to go it on his own, Paul a graduate of FSDG and Certified in Professional Grooming while also attending continuing education in New Jersey in 1988 he and his wife set out to bring the best in grooming to Harrisonburg, VA in 1990 with the opening of K-9 Groom-IN on the corner of University and Reservoir in the Daly building, From the start is was a success with Paul doing over 8 high quality haircuts a day and Darlene bathing up to 15 dogs a day. Soon after the opening they changed the name to K-9 Groom-N because it sounded much more open and warm to clients.
In the summer of 1993 Paul and Darlene realized they could not keep up with demand as they were turning away clients at the rate of 15 per day. The fact was clear Harrisonburg needed us and we had arrived. Near the winter of 1994 the relationship between the Veterinarian who owned the facility and Paul began to get sticky, Paul decided then and there to branch out into what would be one of the boldest move on his grooming career and a start of something bigger.
In 1995 Paul and Darlene moved the grooming salon to the Harrisonburg Animal Hospital for a year long wait for their new facility to be built and also in 1995 the company incorporated to become K-9 Groom-N, Inc. which is the corporate name it uses today. The year with Harrisonburg Animal Hospital was the best year of Paul and Darlene's life to that point as they worked hand and hand with one of the best Veterinarians in Harrisonburg. Dr. Ann Gardner was a inspiration and a blessing to work with and the staff was just as comforting, They made some great friends and even made a best friend out of the deal with Lynn Craun, she is about the most gifted athlete I or they have ever seen as well as a wonderful Vet Tech and a true friend.
