Born in 1918, James Clarke Griffiths, known as Griff, started Griff Building Supplies in Coquitlam in 1964. Originally an employee for Riverdale Lumber, he was a man of drive, character and integrity. Griff took his sales experience, excellent client base & need for independence and he and his early partners built the successful flapship store at 101 Schoolhouse Road. He had no choice but to make it a success, as Griff and his wife had sold their home in Burnaby in order to make it happen. With five daughters under the age of 12 at home, failure was not an option and he put in the long hours of work most new business owners experience at the outset. From sales to set up, grading lumber to working in the yard, it wasn't long before Griff bought out his original partners and proudly built the large warehouse, with all finished products under cover. The hard work paid off and Griff Building Supplies experienced rapid growth through the early 1990's . For over a quarter of a century, Griff established an excellent reputation as a one-stop shop in building supplies. Forty years later, two of his daughters continue the tradition of drive, character and integrity first forged by Griff in 1964, and their intention is continued growth.
Following Griff's death in 1989 and the tremendous expansion of the Coquitlam area in which Griff built the first store, it became apparent that Griff Building Supplies needed new premises. In 2000 the company, now being run by four of Griff's daughter's, moved to 340 Ewen Avenue in the Queensborough area of New Westminster. The 20,000 square foot retail warehouse and 5,000 square foot office space located on 6.5 acres opened on September 9, 2000. The new space offered something for everyone, including lumber, tools, hardware and paint. From building contractors to home renovators, it's got to be Griff.
