In 1991 the republic of Croatia became independent. The country borders for many hundreds of kilometers to the Adriatic Sea, with more then 1000 islands in front of the coast. The majority of these islands are still uninhabited. Although Croatia is not laying next to The Mediterranean Sea, it's been counted to that area because of its climate and its culture.Croatia has 4 neighbour lands: Slovenia in the North-West (670 km), Hungary in the North (329 km), Yugoslavia (Serbia (241 km) and Montenegro (25 km)) in the North-East and Bosnia-Herzegovina in the East. (932 km)
At the coast-town Neum, the Croatian land is interrupted by a small corridor, 20 km long and it belongs to Bosnia-Herzegovina. This corridor separates the area around Dubrovnik and the rest of the country.
The total surface of Croatia is about 56.500 km². It has 4.800.000 citizens, of which 1.000.000 people live in the capital Zagreb. Another 1.000.000 are living in the other cities, so that half of the citizens of Croatia are living on the country. The form of government is a parliamentary democracy. The government is working in Zagreb. The most important way of income for Croatia is tourism.
