Description
In 1995 the official name "hazelnut" was given to allay confusion on the world market. Ninety-nine percent of the hazelnuts grown in the United States come from the rich soils and ideal growing conditions of the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
The name "filbert" comes from an early Christian martyr known as St Philibert who lived in a region where the nuts grew in abundance.
Shakespeare in "The Taming of the Shrew" has a suitor refer to his love:"Kate, like the hazel twig is straight and slender and brown in hue as hazelnuts and sweeter than the kernels." To Shakespearean audiences hazelnuts were a kind of popcorn whose shells helped pave the floor or the Globe Theater.
