GHG Internet Services (Home)
Description
GHG began offering Internet services in June of 1995. The goal was to provide convenient and reliable access to GHG employees and local residents at a reasonable cost. At start-up, two banks of analog modems and a single 128K ISDN line were utilized for connectivity. Due to the tremendous number of referrals, this arrangement lasted only a few months before it became apparent that high-end equipment and greater bandwidth would be required. All-digital terminal servers and a T-1 connected directly to the MCI backbone were installed shortly thereafter.
Today, GHG provides Internet services to over 6,000 users for dial-up and dedicated access. Our connections to the backbone are achieved via a DS-3 from Cable & Wireless and one T-1 from Savvis, for a total of 7.5 Mbps of bandwidth. Having connections through more than one backbone provider ensures redundancy should an outage ever occur. GHG uses Cisco hardware for routing and switching, Lucent Maxen for digital terminal servers, multiple Sun systems for web, email, news, name service, and ftp servers, a Network Appliance file server, as well as other UNIX-based ancillary systems.
In addition to access numbers in Houston, GHG also has a number originating at the Clear Lake Southwestern Bell central office for those customers with Verizon non-Metro telephone service dialing in from League City, Dickinson, Kemah, Nassau Bay and Seabrook.
