It all came to me the night I arrived in our nation’s capitol. A few months earlier I reserved my room accommodations through one of the largest, USA based, tour operators for my upcoming conference to be held in DC. It just so happened that the date of the conference fell on the 7th anniversary of my partner and I. We decided to still celebrate it together, as he would join me despite the conference activities.
As it was due to be a sold out city wide national conference, I sent an advance deposit to ensure all was paid and reserved. I even took my cancelled check to have in case of any issues at the front desk. Being in the hotel industry for over 20 years, I know with citywide events hotel overbooking, just like with the airlines, is normal. Therefore, I kept a log each time I called to verify my reservation. I had verified my room type (1 king bed) and non- smoking preference with the reservations department via regular mail, phone, fax and e-mail. Call me hysterical, but I just wanted to ensure my working/ anniversary stay in DC would be a memorable one.
The night we arrived at the famous DC hotel (I will keep the name of the hotel confidential for purposes of being fair, after all the hotel has since changed ownership), I approached the front desk and was greeted with “your last name, please”. I offered all details, and even tried to make the agents life easy by giving the hotels actual confirmation number. Agent quickly located the number and said, “Yes, here we are. I have a non-smoking room with a king bed for two guests for 7 nights.” I confirmed this was correct. The agent continued to say that due to security reasons he needed to recode in the reservation system the identification of the second guest. I turned to my partner, who was standing in the lobby with our luggage, and ask him for his driver license. He came by the desk and handed his ID over to the agent. The agent gave us both a look and said, “let me see if I can get you a room with two double beds”. I looked at the agent and said “but we just confirmed the king bed. Why are you changing our room type?” The agent looked at me and in a tone that sounded like take it or leave it, said “No, sir we have only two double beds for you”.
