The company has GameStop, EB Games, and Electronics Boutique retail locations unlike the rest of their competitors in the industry. GameStop takes pride in the fact that their services are geared to offer full customer satisfaction—they have a large selection of new products, they have many knowledgeable people behind their company, and they have their own special products as well. GameStop also has GameStop.com and EBgames.com and publish Game Informer, one of the industry's largest videogame magazines in circulation.

History

In 1983 in Dallas, Texas, GameStop’s roots traces all the way back to a mall software retailer called Babbage’s. Babbage's move into becoming what it has become today as GameStop, started with a series of mergers in 1994. The four major competing software retailers merged and organized themselves into a single corporation. In 1994, Babbage's merger with another mall software retailer, Software Etc., brought out another company named NeoStar Retail. The two halves, however, continued to operate as though they were still separate companies. This caused miscommunication between the two, leading to reorganization in early fall of 1996. Electronics Boutique emerged as one of the potential buyers of NeoStar's assets. One of the potential buyers was Electronics Boutique.On April 18, 2005, GameStop and EB Games announced their official agreement and the plan of merger.

Competitive Advantage

It is already a fact that, being the largest store of its kind in the industry of video games and entertainment soft wares, GameStop could offer its customers the widest array of products and services. However, beside this, GameStop also has a lot to offer beside their wide diversity of merchandise. They made it a point that their people might be as diverse as their products are. In this way, their customers might not only find the right product that might suit them, they would also be served by the right people who would understand their needs the most.

It could be said that in GameStop, diversity is more than just a word that means “variety.” It serves for a greater purpose other than considering it as a strategy as so to attract more people. GameStop considers it just as important to have their customers faithful to them as would their employees. Markets, after all, cannot work with only one side taken into full regard. For just a rough estimate, there could be as many people buying as those doing the selling part. At GameStop, they realize that to best serve their customers, they should have the best work environment for their people too.

Corporate Donations

GameStop also made a commitment to become a good neighbor and contribute to nonprofit initiatives that support communities. This support takes the form of national community partnerships and employee volunteerism.

GameStop's national community partner is Do Something! Together they launched the GameStop Youth Innovator Awards which is a grant program for young community leaders and change-makers who are between ten to twenty-five years old. Through this partnership, GameStop encourages young people to identify problems in their communities and to create game plans to do something to change the world.
