Title

Foundation for Teaching Economics: Committed to Excellence in Economic Education

Description

The pages of this annual report describe many aspects of how the FTE is achieving its goal to improve economic education in classrooms around our nation and around the world. In 2004, we directly impacted the lives of 566 students in our leadership programs, and, over the past 14 years, have delivered professional development training to over 12,000 high school teachers — who have taught more than 15,000,000 students. We are able to pursue our goal of promoting a better understanding of (and appreciation for) market economies thanks to contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations. I am most grateful to all those who support our work.

The FTE is impacting millions of students, primarily through their teachers, by designing lesson plans, offering seminars, and providing classroom support for teachers. An example of that process is our newly completed unit, “Is Capitalism Good for the Poor?” With major funding from John Templeton Foundation, the FTE created this 5-lesson unit, which examines how capitalism affects the poor. The unit, based on scholarly research, employs interactive games and simulations to engage students in the learning process, and demonstrates how modern economies have flourished when the proper institutions — the rule of law, private property rights, free markets, and an atmosphere of individual freedom — are present. I should also add we are receiving extremely positive response from teachers to our “Hot Topics” emails — lesson plans that point out the economics imbedded in current events. A recent topic, “Tsunami - The Economics of Natural Disasters,” examined relief efforts.

As you will see, the FTE received accolades from independent evaluators who were commissioned by the Board to measure the results of our efforts. This annual assessment is extremely important as we use information from it to continually improve our programs. You can find the complete 2005 Evaluation & Supporting Data on the FTE’s website (www.fte.org).
