Fort Payne Stockyard Inc is owned and operated by Glean and Mary Plunkett. The Plunketts and Jack and Jo Stiefel had been part owners since May 1999. The Stiefels have recently retired from the stockyard business. Glean and Mary Plunkett had been part owners since August 1997 before becoming the sole owners in 2002. They have had more than twenty years experience in the stockyard business prior to that.
Fort Payne's first cattle auction sale, located in north Fort Payne on a former airport site, was started around 1949 by F H "Bud" Landstreet. Other owners have included Russell Davis, J O and Willard Wright, L D Lingerfelt and J W Pack.
The present stockyard, built by Mr Lingerfelt in 1974, is conveniently located at 302 Airport Road West, approximately 1/2 mile from the Interstate 59 and Alabama Highway 35 intersection. This is Exit 218 on the interstate.
