The freshest flowers, straight from the grower

Flowerbud.com has supplied generous bunches of top-quality flowers to discerning customers since 1999.

The company is always first with seasonal favorites like daffodils, lilies and roses. Flowerbud.com also has unusual flowers like peonies or ranunculus, and offers named flower varieties that no other online service has.

That's because Flowerbud.com works with growers who experiment with small amounts of new varieties, along with the popular flowers they know they can sell.

"They like to start with just a few thousand stems of something special," says Mark Hayes, owner of Flowerbud.com. "For the first five years or so, we can pick it up and be sure no one will be able to buy it anywhere else."

For the choosy customer

Flowerbud.com's prices may seem, at first glance, higher than other online flower merchants. The headline price includes overnight shipping by FedEx, unlike other online flower sellers, who add shipping charges in the shopping cart.

In any case, Flowerbud's customers say the flowers are of such high quality, and the bunches so big, that they won't buy anywhere else. Flowerbud.com ships at least twice as many flowers as most competitors, and they arrive in bud. That means flowers last for two weeks or longer.

"I order from them all the time, and recommend them to everybody," says Samantha Berger, a Los Angeles-based executive with cable television network Nickelodeon. "I don't use other flower services anymore."

Brides are discovering Flowerbud.com. "For people who want to arrange their own flowers, we're the place to go," says Hayes. "Tulips and calla lilies are always popular, but we have some people ordering hundreds of sunflowers for their weddings."

People who buy from Flowerbud.com for the first time are often surprised to get so many flowers in one order. But they keep coming back.

"Our regular customers understand how to use the full bunch," says Hayes. "They know how to arrange it and spread it around the house, and the friends they buy flowers for understand that, too."

Longtime customer Sally Reed of Austin, Texas, gets Flowerbud's Year in Bloom package.

"They send me unusual and special flowers every two weeks," she says. "I am always in fresh flowers."

Superb customer service also sets Flowerbud.com apart.

"If FedEx is delayed and the flowers aren't in great shape when they arrive, they'll send me new flowers," Berger says. "And when I order flowers 12 times in a year, they send me flowers as a customer appreciation. That's outstanding service."

A passion for flowers

Mark Hayes started Flowerbud.com without ever having worked in an Internet company.

His colorful background includes an upbringing in Scotland, a career designing golf courses and creating a botanical garden for an industrial magnate.

Hayes has managed flower farms up and down the West Coast, and had his own flower farm on Sauvie Island near Portland, Oregon.

He knew he could sell fresher, better-quality flowers than other online companies by contracting with growers to ship directly from their farms and greenhouses.

Bob Echter of Dramm and Echter, an Encinitas, California grower that ships lilies for Flowerbud.com, says Mark understands flowers better than most other retailers.

"He knows what to ask of his suppliers, and he checks what we're doing, and what the competition is doing," he says.

Flowers from the heart

Every cancer survivor who crosses the finish line in the Lance Armstrong Foundation's fundraising events receives a yellow rose.

Those roses are supplied -- for free -- by Flowerbud.com.

"One year in Philadelphia, we were expecting 1,200 roses," says Sally Reed, who serves on the steering committee for the foundation's Livestrong Challenge events.

"When they hadn't arrived two days before the event, Mark was beside himself," Reed says.

"He was on the phone with FedEx until 3:00 A.M., making FedEx understand why those roses were so important. FedEx finally hired a private plane to get the roses to us on Saturday, so the survivors could have them on Sunday. Mark really goes above and beyond."
