About Fishleigh Estate Organic Farm

The Fishleigh Estate sits within the gently rolling countryside of North West Devon, lying within the heart of Tarka Country, an area of outstanding natural beauty. The river Torridge itself forms the northern boundary, whilst the ancient market town of Hatherleigh nestles to the south.

History

Fishleigh's most famous occupant was Lieutenant Colonel William Morris born at Fishleigh on the 18th December 1820. He joined the army, serving in India and Ireland before, as a Captain, he was given command of the 17th Lancers on that fateful day of 25th October 1854, when the Light Brigade charged at Balaklava. Despite receiving serious wounds he survived the carnage, recovering sufficiently to serve again in India where he died on the 11th July 1858.

Fishleigh Estate is owned by the Sargent family who purchased the farm in the Spring of 1998. With the assistance of their estate manager Peter Walters, they have succeded in converting the farm to the high organic standards accepted by the soil association. www.soilassociation.org.
