About Hoi Polloi
Formed in October 1987 by Lighting Cameraman, Chris Sutcliffe and Sound Recordist, Paul Gunn to provide an equipped crew facility to the newly emerging independent producers of regional and network television programmes. This proved to be a very successful "one stop shop" for programme makers wishing to hire crews but without the headache of coordinating equipment, personnel and vehicles.
We were fortunate in having the security of a number of long term contracts - good bread and butter during the early days of any small business - but soon realised that this meant turning away any work generated as a consequence of advertising & marketing.
The solution was to persuade two others to join us in forming a second crew. This indeed achieved the goal. Now with Lighting Cameraman, Andy Greenwood and Sound Recordist, Chris Watson the partnership fulfils contracts to a broad section of producers and directors, the main body of work (~90%) being network BBC TV Productions.
