Title

East Anglian Field Study Centre

Description

This is one view of the centre, note the Dutch gable which may indicate that it was built around 1760 at which time the Dutch were very active in this region as their expertise was being utilized to drain the Fens.

Also note the coat of arms at the top of the gable, this is the Hare family coat of arms and they once owned the centre which at that stage was an inn . Incidentally they also owned virtually everything else for many miles around.

In the early days of the buildings existence there was a large amount of horse drawn barge traffic along the river which is immediately infront of the centre. The building was then an inn and served the men and women who were responsible for the barges. The trade of the inn was helped by the river being tidal so that when the tide was out the barges could not be moved so everyone retired to the inn, which was incidentally called the Crown House. Rumor has it that the beer flowed very freely and often the next tide was missed so they stayed in the inn for another drinking session and this sometimes went on for days.
