Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a disorder of unknown aetiology predominantly affecting obese women of childbearing age. The hallmark of the condition is chronic raised intracranial pressure (ICP) in the absence of other identifiable disease, with a normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) composition and ventricular system in an otherwise healthy patient. IIH is not benign as it may cause severe papilloedema, leading to progressive optic atrophy and visual loss; hence the term ‘benign intracranial hypertension’ has been superseded.
