Harvest Moon Farms has been known locally for our wonderful varieties of vegetables, our high quality seed, and our selection of bedding plants. We decided after ever increasing demand for our seeds from different parts of the country to expand our business. Though we only started supplying seed and bedding plants commercially beyond our local area in 1996, our history and our business goes back much further. Harvest Moon Farms & Seed is a company founded from the influence and guidance of 2 families, each very different in their origins and very special in their own ways.
One family's origins date back to my great-great grandfather William Brubaker and his family of Dunker growers & seedsman who trace their history back to Switzerland & Germany in the late 1500's. From there they immigrated to the 'colonies' and Virgina in the 1600's before this great country gained its independence, onward to Pennsylvannia, and then to the present day Ohio Valley at the time Ohio became a state in the early 1800's. Through the traditions passed from generation to generation we learned of the values of patience, honesty, and working the earth and enjoying the bounty it provides. Those values, along with the knowledge gathered from generations of experience, has blessed us not only with the skills of propagation and growing, but also with the respect for what we do and who we are.
Another journey began in much the same way in generations past in Cuneo, Italy. My father's family came as many did in the 1800's looking for that great opportunity and hope that America offered (and still does to this day). From his family's heritage and knowledge passed on to us came the passion for what we do and the things that we grow. Yet this is a passion not only for growing, but is also a passion for the flavors and varieties we have come to cherish for the table and their meaning as we honor and remember our history and heritage. To an Italian each variety speaks of his heritage, of the region from which he came, and it creates a connection he shares with those around him and his family's past. This is a connection we feel even today through many of the wonderful selections we have found and now offer to you.
