New Zealand consists of two main islands (North and South), surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. The landmass of New Zealand is very similar to that of Great Britain but with a population 20 times smaller at just over 4,000,000. Auckland is the biggest city with a population of over one million people!
Dairy farming is one of the major industries in New Zealand, contributing to 20% of our total export income. In fact there are nearly 4,000,000 cows grazed in approximately 12,250 herds - and you thought we only had sheep! The average herd size is 315 and 82% of dairy farms are in the North Island.
Opportunities in New Zealand are, as we say over here, ‘awesome’. Where better to learn how to efficiently get milk from an all grass system, to manage large herds and to work effectively as part of a team. There are a variety of learning opportunities ranging from 180 cow units up to the large 3,500 cow operations available in both the North and South Islands.
