Drug Busts: One ton or greater

Things have been hopping in Spain. Just before New Years Eve, police in Madrid announced they had seized 2.2 tons of cocaine, their largest single bust ever. The drug was brought in from Venezuela via Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Miami, Florida. The drugs were supposedly bound for Seville.

On January 16, Spanish police announced that they had captured a record 50 tons of cocaine last year, indicating that consumption of the drug across Europe was fast catching up with the United States. Last year’s haul confirmed Spain’s position among the top five countries in the world in cocaine seizures, with the rest all in the Americas. According to Spain’s El País newspaper, Spain now accounts for 60% of the cocaine finding its way into Europe, even though the police there manage to intercept some 20% of the drug that is being transshipped. Spanish authorities are estimating that Europe as a whole consumed upwards of 410 tons of the drug during 2005. Most of the drug is transshipped from Africa.

On January 20, Spanish police struck again, when they seized a Panamanian-flagged fishing boat carrying 2,500 kilograms of cocaine in the Canary Islands. Spanish customs officials and police north of the island of Tenerife arrested 21 people.
