- First Church of Christ, Scientist, Portsmouth, NH, is a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston Massachusetts. Mary Baker Eddy the discoverer of Christian Science, a New Hampshire native, founded the Mother church in 1879. Her purpose was "To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing." (Church Manual, pg. 17).
