Title

The National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research

Description

The National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (NAEVR) is a non-profit advocacy organization comprised of a coalition of nearly 50 professional, consumer and industry organizations involved in eye and vision research. NAEVR's goal is to achieve the best eye and vision care for all Americans through advocacy and public education for eye and vision research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Eye Institute (NEI) and other federal research entities.

NAEVR was formed in 1997 as an affiliated organization of the Alliance for Eye and Vision Research (AEVR) to carry out advocacy activities of the coalition. AEVR was founded in 1993 by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO). The primary purpose of AEVR, an educational foundation, is to educate Congress and the public about the value of eye and vision research.

NAEVR believes that the National Eye Institute has made tremendous contributions to eye and vision research that have served to contain health care costs and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans. NAEVR is concerned about preserving the national commitment to eye and vision research through the support of the NEI, since the Institute's funding has not kept pace with the doubling of the NIH budget that occurred from FY1998 to FY2003, as well as the growth of vision impairment and eye disease, especially that associated with an aging and increasingly diverse population.
