In the 1920s East York students were crowded into four existing schools. In order to alleviate this crowding, in September 1927, the East York High School was opened at the corner of Coxwell and Cosburn Avenues. The state of the art building consisted of twelve classrooms, two science rooms, a lecture room, an art room, a library, two restrooms, three lunchrooms, a locker system, a gymnasium and an auditorium. In only three years, an extension of twelve classrooms, a shower room and an enlarged gymnasium was added. In the 1937, the same year East York township was created by an act of provincial legislature, East York High School was merged with a neighbouring vocational school and East York Collegiate Institute was born.
