About Us

When our Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo Camille had a seizure as a result of zinc toxicity, we were shocked. Shocked to think our galvanized wire flights, in which our birds spent their days and sometimes nights, were poisonous to them. Shocked to think no one had told us about this. But this was 1997 and news of zinc toxicity was just coming out. We wanted to continue giving our birds the freedom and sunshine afforded in a flight but we couldn't put them back in zinc coated wire as all the Cockatoos tested positive for high zinc levels, even those not showing symptoms. We tried spraying the wire with vinegar and water, then scrubbing it and letting it dry in the sun, but later Camille's little brother Tivi became very ill. The diagnosis was the same: zinc toxicity. Fortunately, both Camille and Tivi recovered after lengthy, stressful and costly treatment.

We contacted many companies but all that was available was stainless steel and the price was too high. Also, we didn't like the cold, industrial look of stainless. We knew we had to come up with an alternative.

It was a necessity to design a flight that was as parrot safe as possible. We also wanted it to have all the features people like, such as easy assembly, easy cleaning, a floor strong enough to walk on, a full-size key door with an easy to use, bird-proof latch and rust resistance. Knowing that nothing is truly rust proof, even galvanized wire, we sought a way to minimize the amount of oxidation. Finally, we desired something attractive that would add to the beauty of a garden, deck, patio or room.
