Description
EveryWoman's Self Defense was founded by Suzanne Pinette, who currently serves as Executive Director. She founded EveryWoman's Self Defense in order to provide the women in her community with the self-defense information they really need -- self defense instruction for women, by women.
EveryWoman's Self Defense provides personal safety training and violence prevention workshops for women, children, and men. We believe that an individual is most likely to make the best decisions in threatening situations when she or he has developed a variety of responses, including verbal assertion skills, de-escalation techniques and physical defense skills. Our workshops are designed to expand the repertoire of possible responses of the participants and to educate them with up-to-date, effective self-defense information and techniques for reducing risks in dangerous situations. Self-defense training can encourage empowerment and healing for survivors of assault, as well as serve as effective violence prevention.
EveryWoman's Self Defense provides regular, monthly personal safety workshops for women. During the school year, the Girl Scouts keep our calendar full with violence prevention workshops for their girls. EWSD also teaches workshops set up by local community groups, for both women and men. We have taught co-ed courses at the University of Texas for Students Acting Against Sexual Assault and at OutYouth Austin for gay teens. As a community service, we provide courses for women recovering from substance abuse and domestic violence.
