Description
English PEN is the founding centre of International PEN, a membership association with 130 branches over 100 countries, providing an active and supportive focus in the home community for writers and for other professionals working in the literary sector. International PEN was founded in 1921, the only worldwide association of writers. English PEN is governed by the Executive Committee which is elected from and by the members of English PEN. The president is currently Dr. Alastair Niven, OBE. English PEN is staffed by a small team of professionals dedicated to the ideals and principles of English PEN.
We run regular Campaigns, raising the issues and concerns of our members, defending their right to free expression and promoting the free exchange of ideas. Since the 1960s we have fielded one of International PEN's largest Writers in Prison committees supporting and campaigning on behalf of members around the world.
We are extremely proud of our first-class Events programme, ranging from large scale public discussions and debates to our programme of monthly literary events. We also run an extremely successful literacy programme Readers and Writers, founded in 2000, which promotes literacy and literature in underserved communities. Most recently, we have launched a new programme dedicated to supporting and promoting literary translation, Writers in Translation.
