Portland Communications is no newcomer to the World Wide Web. First developed in 1993 as a Bulletin Board Service (BBS), the original online communities that pre-dated the Internet, Portland BBS soon grew to become one the leading such communities in the United Kingdom.

Portland stood out for several reasons: it was free to use, had very little rules, and had a great community of users. The range included a variety of technical, creative, and professional backgrounds.
