- Sexually transmitted diseases, or STD's for short, used to include only gonorrhea, syphilis or nongonococcal urethritis. However, in the last few years new STD's have joined in, namely aids or herpes. The most common venereal disease today is chlamydia, caused by chlamydia trachomatis. Lesser known STD's are mycoplasma genitalium and ureaplasma urealyticum. Although strictly seen this gastrointestinal disease is not a STD, hepatitis c is also sexually transmitted and should be mentioned here.
