About the Artist

I am a lampwork artist and jewelry designer from N. C. As a child I remember being mesmerized by a glass blower melting and twisting hot glass into tiny figurines and intricate Cinderella carriages. It seemed so magical. Years later I saw a lamp-bead artist at a craft fair melting and layering colorful glass to create elaborate glass beads; and I felt the same fascination with the flame and molten glass I remembered as a child. I found a gallery that taught lamp-working classes and signed up. I was hooked. I’ve always had a strong love of colors and beautiful things. I love the endless colors possibilities that come from the layering of the glass.

Lampworking is an ancient art. In the 17th century, Italian beadmakers created heat by blowing into the flame of an oil lamp to create their lamp-work. Today, I use an oxygen-propane torch. Each bead is still created one at a time in age old tradition. I use mostly Italian Moretti glass, and some Borosilicate glass. The rods are heated until molten and then wrapped around a steel mandrel, all the while turning the mandrel in the flame of an oxygen-propane torch. Once a bead is formed, stringers of glass, silver leaf , and colorful frit are used to decorate and layer the colors of glass. The process is mysterious and almost seductive as the flame creates a wonderful mingling of colors and shapes. Each bead is unique; No two beads are alike. All beads are kiln annealed for added strength and stability.
