I am an independent educational consultant, and my current practice focuses on private school and college counseling, as well as therapeutic placements. I am the author of a number of national guides that help students locate appropriate independent schools and colleges. I am in good health, except for my leukemia, and I am very positive that I will be in remission upon the completion of my chemo-treatments. I am the proud mother of three children and seven grand-children.
I have known about my leukemia for more than ten years. Diagnosed in the early 1990’s with CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia), I had never been treated until the fall of 2004. Few of my friends and none of my clients knew about my leukemia. I felt there was little reason to discuss this, because I had been informed that I would probably never be treated.
Coming from the Boston area, with its world renowned doctors, health care professionals, hospitals, and universities, I had been followed by a caring, gentle, exceptionally bright hematologist /oncologist, Dr. Stephen Come, a doctor at the Beth Israel Hospital. Then in the spring of 2004, I consulted with doctors at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. After talking to Dr. John Gribben and now my present doctor, Dr. Arnold Freedman at Dana-Farber, I learned that little money has been allocated for research of CLL, a disease that inspires little interest or awareness because it primarily affects older people. Through my investigations, I have learned that there are a number of young people who have also been diagnosed with this disease. I feel strongly that it is time to educate the public about leukemia and especially CLL. With the proper funds, I feel that doctors and researchers will find a cure so all of us can Embrace Life.
