I received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee Technological University in 1976. I went to work for Motorola in Schaumburg Illinois where I led a team of engineers and technicians developing small low power communication devices. I had worked with hybrid microelectronics as a PhD candidate and continued working with that technology at Motorola.
In 1980 I took a job with Wyle Laboratories in Huntsville Alabama where I did thermal and photovoltaic solar energy research. I also designed a low cost battery monitor for use in electric vehicles. In 1983, I became a design engineer in the Military Electronics Division Chrysler Corp. in Huntsville Alabama where I designed several embedded computers base on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor. I developed a method of displaying video on an electroluminescent display that I thought was novel enough to seek patent protection. I worked with in-house attorneys doing a patent search which revealed that the prior art would so limit the scope of any patent that pursuing a patent was not worthwhile.
In 1990 I took the position of Director of Research and Development at a small company in Huntsville named VMIC. Approximately a year later I became Vice President of Research and Development. In the early 1990’s VMIC was threatened with a patent infringement law suit by a company holding patents relating to Reflective Memory. Using outside council, VMIC filed a Declaratory Judgment Action which, as expected, resulted in a patent infringement counter suit. Another company filed a law suit against VMIC alleging patent infringement of their patents relating to VMEbus single board computers. In both cases I was VMIC’s technical interface with outside council. I worked with council to understand the asserted patents. I provided a technical understanding of the products that were alleged to infringe the patents in view of the independent claims and specifications. I supported council in the preparation of requests for document production, interrogatories and admissions. I also participated in preparing responses to requests for document production, interrogatories and admissions. I supported council in depositions of both sides and was deposed myself. One case went to arbitration and I participated in the preparation of the case to be presented to the arbiter and associated visual aides.
